What is Recapture?

Recapture is part of Texas’ school finance system, also known as “Robin Hood.” Under state law, school districts that are considered property-wealthy are required to send a portion of their local property tax revenue to the state.

G-PISD is subject to recapture and is projected to have a recapture obligation of approximately $27.1 million for the 2026–27 school year.

What happens if the Attendance Credit Election passes? What happens if it fails?

This experience brought their Amplify curriculum to life while building real-world connections through collaboration and curiosity!

🎶📚 Nursery Rhymes Come to Life at the G-P Early Childhood Center!✨

🎥 G-PTV: Behind the Camera!

G-P High School's G-PTV students have hit the ground running this school year, gaining hands-on experience in interviewing, filming, and producing content.

Students recently had the opportunity to interview Superintendent Dr. Michelle Cavazos about the new Fine Arts Wing, Culinary Kitchen, and school cafeteria. Their work was featured during the G-PHS Open House and Community Showcase!

G-PTV students have also taken their skills beyond campus, filming commercials for local businesses participating in the G-P Education Foundation's scoreboard advertising program. Their commercials are now being featured on the scoreboard during Friday night football games!

We’re only a few weeks into the school year, and our students are already putting their skills into action.

Question of the Week: Why is it called an Attendance Credit Election?

It is called an Attendance Credit Election because voters are being asked to authorize G-PISD to purchase attendance credits from the state as the method for making its required recapture payments.

Attendance credits are a funding method under Texas law. Despite the name, they do not relate to student attendance or require students to transfer to another school district.

We understand that school finance and recapture can be confusing. G-PISD is committed to providing clear, factual information to help our community understand these topics.

🔵Why is G-PISD Holding an Election Now?🔴
Recapture is not new to G-PISD. In previous years, G-PISD was able to make its recapture payments through adjustments to the state funding the district received.

For the 2026–27 school year, G-PISD’s projected recapture obligation is approximately $27.1 million, which is greater than the state funding available to cover it.

As a result, voter authorization is required for G-PISD to use the purchase of attendance credits to make its required recapture payments.
