Have you ever wondered exactly how much food your child is getting with their lunch?

Here's a quick visual to help explain. (The "maximum" picture is the maximum a child can get with a reimbursable meal, anything additional would be an extra cost.)

Gregory-Portland ISD Food & Nutrition Services (a.k.a. Wildcat Café) has been awarded Prime Participant recognition from the Texas Department of Agriculture for our participation in this years Farm Fresh Challenge.  The challenge took place during the month of October 2024 and required that we serve 3 Texas grown, raised and produced foods representing 3 different meal components during the month.

Local products served during the challenge were:

Lettuce from True Harvest Farms in Belton, TX
Gala apples from Top of Texas Farms in Idalou, TX
Texas grown watermelons
Milk from Oak Farms/Hill Country Dairies in Austin, TX

We are proud to support Texas farmers and businesses and encourage all of YOU to eat local as well!

FARM FRESH PRODUCE!

🌟THE MORE YOU KNOW: A lot of the produce we serve in our schools is LOCAL Farm to School - meaning the product comes local Texas farmers, not some far off state or country. While not all produce can be sourced locally, we do obtain as much as we can from local sources.

WHAT GOES INTO MAKING SCHOOL MEALS?

Did you know that making school meals is more than just cooking the food?  Each School District has Government, State AND District policies they have to follow in order to serve nutritious and delicious meals to your child.  Each menu is carefully planned and executed to not only follow all of these policies, but also to be sure it has something appetizing to most (if not, ALL) children.  Take a look at the graphic below to get an idea of just how much and how many people are involved in the process of providing food in schools for children.
