Have a wonderful summer!

Book recommendation for summer reading: "Secret Keepers" by Trenton Lee Stewart.

We are so excited for this new year to begin! Please note that virtual learning will take place in Microsoft Teams.

It has been my pleasure to teach 5th grade this year! I am so proud of the way my students continued learning and growing!

Over the next three weeks, our classes will build their knowledge about our planet, with a focus on the persuasive text genre. We will read texts and view videos about different things people do to care for the earth and its living things. Students will write a persuasive letter about an environmental issue that is important to them.

Over the next three weeks, our class will build their knowledge about westward expansion, with a focus on the informational text genre. We will read texts and view videos about how workers and families had varied experiences during the time of westward expansion. Students will also be writing formal letters requesting information.

Over the next three weeks, our class will build their knowledge about natural disasters, with a focus on the informational text genre. We will read texts and view videos about how Earth's movements, features, and weather can cause natural disasters. Students will also write a persuasive essay.

Hello Family!

Over the next three weeks, our class will build their knowledge about sub-genres of fiction, with a focus on different ways to tell a great story. We will read texts and view videos about how writers share compelling stories in literature of many types. Children will write a narrative using their imagination and mentor text.

During this 3-week module, students will read and annotate informational text, build their vocabulary, identify author's purpose, central ideas, and text structure, and write an expository essay on an inventor/invention of their choice.

Bio

My name is Stephanie Duran, and this is my third year teaching 5th grade ELAR and Social Studies at East Cliff Elementary. I previously worked in our school library for several years and developed a true passion for literacy and the teaching profession. I received my B.S. and M.S. in Elementary Education from TAMUCC.

Portland is such a fantastic community, and my husband and I have loved raising our 3 kids here. I enjoy working in my garden, cooking, and reading-of course!!!
