Special Education FAQs

How do you know if a child needs special education services?

To be eligible to receive special education services, a child must meet specific criteria set forth by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Specifically, it must be determined by an ARD committee that (1) the child has a disability and (2) demonstrates educational need for specially designed instruction in order to make progress in the educational setting. Parents, teachers, or administrator may recommend a student for consideration for special education services by contacting the school counselor.

What is an ARD Committee?

ARD is an acronym for Admission, Review and Dismissal. This committee includes the parent, administrator, general education teacher, special education teacher and typically assessment personnel and perhaps other persons familiar with the student's needs. This committee makes decisions concerning both eligibility and educational program/services for the student.

If my child is/was receving special education services in his/her current school, is there anything I should bring to the campus when I register my child in GPISD ?

Gregory-Portland ISD needs complete records from the previous school district/program. These records should include, but not be limited to, the current Individual Education Plan (IEP), the most recent Full Individual Evaluation (FIE), the student's last annual ARD and any other data that may assist Gregory-Portland ISD in determining appropriate services for the student. A release can be signed to have the records sent to Gregory Portland ISD or, to expedite services, you can provide the campus with a copy.

If my child is/was receving special education services in his/her current school What will the process be for my child to start receiving special education services in GPISD?

If the student has received special education services in a public school previously, Gregory-Portland ISD school will hold a temporary/transfer Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) meeting once records/verification of previous services is received. Following that meeting, services can start immediately. A permanent placement Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) meeting will be held within 30 school days after all records and necessary reports are received or completed in order to finalize appropriate special education services for the student.
