Welcome to shop.
EXCELLENT WORK is what EXCELLENT STUDENTS do to be EXCELLENT!
During the semester, we will be constructing bridges, rockets, CO2 powered race cars, pen or pencil and an individual project of the student's choosing.
My goal is for the students to learn the proper use of shop equipment in a fun and safe environment.

We will be starting the 2011 - 2012 year with some sadness, Mr. Young, a shop volunteer for the last year, passed away at the end of the school year. We will miss his talent and humor. I have purchased new equipment for the shop this year - a CNC router. This equipment is expensive but it will give the kids an opportunity to look at what woodworking is moving to in the future. The students will have the opportunity to make signs, etc for a small fee.

Most of everything that your child will use in this class is provided; however, there are a few items that are not. Your child should have a ruler (12 inch). It does not need to be fancy, just one that works. A pencil is also necessary. I try to provide everything else for the kids. Please check the "Document Manager" button. I have ALL of the class handouts there for you should your child misplace his/hers.

To begin the semester, we will be working out of the text for a few weeks covering things like reading a ruler, working with fractions found in a shop setting, some basic drafting skills as well as learning to use a compass. I hope to begin the first group project (bridge building) by the beginning of October. The faster I receive the shop fees, the faster the children will be able to start their projects.

We are now in our third year of Building Trades class. This class is an application of what the students learned in Intro class. In this class, the students will be working in the shop almost exclusively. Grades are based on planning and project completion. This class has very little "class" work. Please discuss potential projects with your child. Class requirements are that a "substantial" project be completed by semester's end. Planning, cost projection, and completion are all graded. If you have a student in this class, feel free to contact me regarding your student's projects.
