How do you if a child needs special education services?
To receive special education services, a child must meet specific criteria by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and the Texas Education Agency (TEA). A parent, teachers, or administrator may recommend a student for consideration for special education services by contacting the school counselor.

What exactly is the ARD Committee?
ARD is an acronym for Admission, Review and Dismissal committee. This committee, which includes the parent, administrator, teacher and other staff familiar with the student's needs, makes decisions concerning the educational program/services of a student referred to or receiving special education support.

Is there anything I should bring with me from my child's current school to assist in transferring to GPISD?
Gregory-Portland ISD needs complete records from the previous school district or program serving the student. These records should include but not be limited to the current Individual Education Plan (IEP), the most recent Comprehensive Individual Assessment, and any other reports which will assist Gregory-Portland ISD in determining the appropriate services for an individual student. A release can be signed to have the records sent to Gregory-Portland ISD or you can bring the records yourself.

What will the process be for my child to start receiving special education services?
If the student has been in special education previously, the Gregory-Portland ISD school will hold a Temporary Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee meeting upon the student registering for school so that the student may start receiving services immediately. Another Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee meeting will be held within 30 school days after all records and necessary reports are received or completed.

Is there someone I can call to get information on Gregory-Portland ISD’s special services or get further assistance with this transition?
